Choosing a Tutor

Category: Letters from Parents, Tutoring Information

The following is a story from a parent of one of our students. If you feel our Virginia tutoring services have made an impact on your life, please contact us to submit your story.

Throughout my son’s education, we never needed a tutor, Alex seemed to breeze through elementary school, and middle school with ease. A couple of his friends needed tutors here and there, but it wasn’t something that I was that familiar with. After all, my son didn’t need a tutor. Or so I thought. When my son reached the ninth grade, he began having problems with algebra. It seemed odd, because he had always excelled in math. We thought that it was just a phase. High school was new, maybe he was a little overwhelmed with the extracurricular activities.

When he continued to struggle, I became concerned. There had to be more to it than just academic trouble. Math was Alex’s strongest subject. In fact he won the math award at his middle school. When he received a failure notice, I was brought into school for a parent teacher conference. The teacher had suggested that Alex work with a tutor to give the extra help needed. While I was reluctant, I began my search and chose a local tutoring company. What I learned was quite a surprise. Alex’s struggles were actually brought on by his natural ability in mathematics. While he floated through his early math courses, he did so on instinct; never learning the proper steps one must take to solve math problems. Working with the tutor from Academic Connections, Alex relearned following the steps that needed to be taken in learning formulas and procedures. The results have been exceptional. Alex has regained his place at the top of the class, thanks to the extra help needed.
